Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness (PREP) – Visualizing data to build climate resilience

Organizer: Amanda Shores
Format: Online, Evening

Abstract:
The Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness (PREP) is a public-private collaboration that seeks to improve access to useful data and empower communities and businesses to better plan for and build climate resilience. PREP has developed PREPdata (www.prepdata.org) – a map-based, open-data online platform that allows users to access and visualize climate, physical and socioeconomic data for climate adaptation and resilience planning. PREPdata also provides the capacity for users to monitor and share key environmental and socioeconomic indicators through customized dashboards, and share stories of how they are using data to prepare for climate change. During this 90-minute session, participants will be given a short introduction to the PREPdata platform and its capabilities. PREPdata’s ability to bring scale-appropriate climate projections together with local/regional governments and stakeholders will be demonstrated by focusing on PREP work done in Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand, India. Participants will then be led through a demonstration for creating meaningful maps in PREP’s Explore function. Once a basic understanding of how to use PREP has been reached, breakout groups will then allow participants to Explore an area and topic of interest, and develop their own maps. Groups will come back together to share their maps and what was discovered through their investigation. This session will lead participants through creating a PREP profile, exploring geospatial climate predictions (NEX-GDDP and LOCA data sources), and generating sharable maps. Additional resources will be provided to learn about other PREP functionality, such as telling stories with data and maps through PREPdata’s Dashboard function and integrating local data with PREP’s human, environment, and climate data for a more thorough understanding of complex, overlapping systems at play within sustainability.
