Future Oceans – Bridging Sustainability priorities for Early Career Professionals

Organizer: Kirsten Rowell
Format: Online, Morning

Abstract:
The Future Oceans’ workshop builds a diverse and transdisciplinary network of early career researchers interested in solutions toward sustainable oceans. This workshop will be the second in a series of five sessions focused on the visions, perspectives, and pressing issues offered by Early Career Oceans Researchers and Professionals (ECORP) from diverse backgrounds. A cohort of up to 30 ECORP will identify and start working on interdisciplinary issues that directly address global ocean sustainability challenges under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UN Decade). The UN Decade offers a framework to strengthen connections and weave partnerships between all communities working to study, conserve and sustainably use the ocean and its resources. As such, there is an immediate need to identify the key scientific knowledge and research questions that will facilitate achieving these goals. However, ECORPs are not well represented in these discussions despite their expertise and proximity to the predicted changes in our oceans. If the impacts of the UN Decade are to persist beyond 2030, we need to engage ECORPs and strengthen the science-policy-action interface.

This session is capped at 27 participants, and interested SRI registrants should apply by May 30th. Any questions can be directed to Alfredo Giron Nava (agiron@stanford.edu) and Kirsten Rowell (kirsten.rowell@colorado.edu).
