Visiting Brisbane

Australia, who hosts this year’s Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress, plays a unique role in the global community as a conduit between the Global North and the Global South, and indigenous peoples and traditional sustainability practices.

Australia is one of the largest countries in the world by area, and is an ancient landscape with low, intermittent rainfall. Settlement has created opportunities and prosperity for Australians and those in the Oceanic region, while also representing serious degradation of biodiversity, high susceptibility to climate change impacts and uneven access to opportunity.

The congress will showcase the challenge of sustainable development for Australia and the similar issues faced in countries around the world. It will address how we maintain an equitable and desirable lifestyle through creating new economic opportunities within the bounds set by these geopolitical, social, economic and biophysical parameters – as articulated in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Brisbane is the gateway to great Australian tourist icons – pristine beaches, rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef – the best of Australia at your fingertips. The Congress will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), named World’s Best Convention Centre 2016-2018, by the International Association of Congress Centres. Located at the very centre of Brisbane’s Knowledge Corridor, BCEC is surrounded by universities, world leading research institutes and major hospitals.

The local hosts are Future Earth Australia and a consortium of Australian universities, CSIRO and the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist.
